Quarterly Update from the IAC
The year is off to a rocky start in the first quarter, the large cap indices were approximately the same at the end of last year as they were at March 31, 2015. In spite of the static prices in the large capitalization area, we managed to still grow Fund E by 2.1% due to our adherence to the investment discipline. Many small cap and international funds, that didn't perform well in 2014, had a good first quarter. As we always do, we stayed with the plan and it continues to work for us.

Through a unique service offered by The Foundation for Enhancing Communities (TFEC), called a "fiscal sponsorship" there is a clean and easy way to achieve a charitable goal without the hassle of the paperwork.
 
New Real Estate Opportunities at TFEC
An exciting new development in the world of The Foundation for Enhancing Communities (TFEC) is the recent creation and development of TFEC Properties, Inc., a new corporation. This new entity will allow TFEC to receive, hold, manage, lease and otherwise process real estate gifts from donors to benefit nonprofit organizations. Policies and guidelines have now been adopted and confirmed by the TFEC Board of Directors that allow TFEC Properties, Inc. to actively pursue and receive real estate in a way that has never been available previously to donors. As the Baby Boomer generation ages, the opportunities for sizeable charitable gifts are tremendous simply due to the fact that most developed real estate, such as homes, second homes and/or investment real estate, has a value over $100,000.

Philanthropy Outlook: 2015 & 2016
Philanthropy in the United States is a vital aspect of America's social, economic and civil life. For many years, philanthropic endeavors have helped support the arts, environment and education, make communities stronger, and provide for basic human needs to name just a few examples. The Philanthropy Outlook predicts the coming years to be more stable and optimistic than in the past with the following highlights for 2015 and 2016:
  • Increased contributions from all sources of giving
  • Increased total giving to exceed the estimated annualized average rate of growth since the Great Recession (3.1%)
  • Increased giving by foundations and corporations
  • Increased giving through estates
Emerging Philanthropist Program
The Emerging Philanthropists Program (EPP) was started in 2014 through collaboration between The Foundation for Enhancing Communities (TFEC) and the Harrisburg Young Professionals (HYP). HYP sifted through a number of applications and chose 12 young professionals from Central PA to be a part of the inaugural class. This program was put together to engage young professionals in the various philanthropic needs in our communities.
 
Parents & Partners: An Introduction
Parents & Partners, TFEC's newest early childhood initiative and extension of Capital Beginnings, has been very active since receiving its grant in mid-2014 with three main goals:
  1. Develop stronger relationships between early childhood programs and school districts to build birth to third grade alignment
  2. Increase family supports and parental engagement within their child's academic career
  3. Strengthen the network and coordination of community organizations that serve children and families with young children

TFEC News
In November 2014, TFEC welcomed Chera Yankowski to the team as our new Executive Assistant; Ginny Bush, our former Executive Assistant, retired at the end of 2014. Over the past several months, Chera has become a vital member of the team by providing direct support to the President and CEO and TFEC's Board of Directors.

Earlier this year, Leslie Fick joined TFEC as the Program Manager for Parents & Partners, an early childhood initiative of TFEC. Leslie currently works in conjunction with the Program Manager for Capital Beginnings, Jeanne Predmore, to implement the Community Innovation Zone program grant that was awarded to TFEC and its partners from the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare, Office of Child Development & Early Learning.

On May 31, 2015, James Kroll Lloyd, Communications Officer, will be leaving TFEC and moving to Cooperstown, NY with his husband. James has been instrumental in building our communications department, redesigning the website, and much more. We are extremely sad to see him leave but wish him best of luck in this next chapter of his life. We sincerely thank him for all his work and effort to help TFEC become better known in the region.
Women's Fund Update
On March 3, the Women's Fund hosted another successful Annual Grantee Recognition Breakfast highlighting and honoring their 12 grantees from 2014. The event raised over $6,500 that will be used to help advance the mission of the Women's Fund. Please click here to view a list of the 2014 Women's Fund grantees.

In 2014, the Women's Fund provided financial support to the Institute for Women's Policy Research (IWPR) for their Status of Women in the States: 2015 report. Starting last month, IWPR has released their first report focusing on women's employment and earnings. According to the report, Pennsylvania ranks 23 in the United States earning a C+ on women's employment and earnings. Earlier this month, the second report was released focusing on poverty and opportunity for women. According to this report, Pennsylvania received a C on indicators related to women's poverty and opportunity, ranking 21 in the United States. Throughout the spring, IWPR will release additional reports with state-level data on Violence and Safety, Health and Well-Being, Reproductive Rights, Political Participation, and Work and Family. Regional Foundations
Camp Hill Community Foundation is pleased to announce its 2015 grant recipients. CHCF's strategic grantmaking focus is to invest in innovative, collaborative approaches and solutions to community problems, and to support projects that have the potential for the greatest impact on the quality of life and positive outcomes for individuals and families living in Camp Hill. A total of $8,320 was awarded to the following nonprofit organizations:
  • Camp Hill Eisenhower Elementary School - $1,500.00
    • Project: 2015 Arbor Day Celebration
    • Description: A science, language arts, and history based program, the 2015 Arbor Day Celebration will be tailored to teach the value of trees inclusive of every one of the 300+ students enrolled at Eisenhower Elementary School and their teachers
  • The Lion Foundation - $5,320.00
    • Project: Purchase four 8' durable cast iron benches
    • Description: Benches will be placed next to the tennis courts in Siebert Park, one for each court, as well as a new hitting backboard to replace the one demolished during construction of the new facility
  • New Hope Ministries - $1,500.00
    • Project: Workforce Development & Job Training
    • Description: This will benefit low-income individuals residing in Camp Hill who are specifically looking to obtain job training and educational assistance

Franklin County Foundation Advisory Committee will be meeting with two other Franklin County funders, the Summit Health Endowment and the United Way of Franklin County, in May 2015 to explore a partnership opportunity. The goal of the meeting is to find ways to partner and develop an efficient process for nonprofit organizations to apply for grants and increase the impact of the charitable dollars in the community. The eventual goal of any partnership will be to increase the capacity of nonprofit organizations providing services and programs to Franklin County residents that improve their overall health and wellness. Stay tuned for more information about this potential funding partnership!

Mechanicsburg Area Foundation Advisory Committee will be meeting on May 28th at the Kindergarten Academy at Filbert Street. A 2014 grantee of MAF, the committee will be touring the academy to learn more about their grant funded program and how the funding is impacting the youth. In 2014, the Kindergarten Academy at Filbert Street received $2,000 from MAF for the Murals and Math program. In collaboration with Jump Street and Sprocket Mural Works, the academy planned to help kindergarteners understand both concrete and abstract math curriculum concepts through the use of visual art. Teachers work closely with a muralist to learn how to integrate art in a way that their students can gain more clarity on abstract topics and know the value of using art to show their learning and understanding for the math curriculum. Each lesson builds upon the last and will culminate into the installment of a permanent mural which will be a visual representation of the students' work. The MAF Advisory Committee regularly meets at grantee locations to learn more about the ongoing programs and educate themselves on the services available to Mechanicsburg residents.

Perry County Community Foundation Advisory Committee will be meeting on April 29 to select their 2015 grantees. PCCF will also be hosting an inaugural Grantee Recognition Luncheon on Wednesday, June 10 from 11:30 - 1:30 pm at the Highland Park United Presbyterian Church. Shippensburg Produce and Outreach

Shippensburg Produce and Outreach (SPO) is a volunteer organization providing fresh produce and services for Shippensburg area residents. Created in 2009 to fulfill the need for fresh produce for low-income families, SPO's mission is to help those in need by responding with food and/or services. SPO has been growing substantially over the past few years, with a 29% increase in clients served in 2014 over the previous year. Since SPO's founding, growth has been manageable as volunteers continued to learn the processes of running a fresh produce food pantry. They have successfully raised funds to pay a part-time coordinator; however, the vast majority of raised funding is needed for the purchase and distribution of fresh produce to those in need in the Shippensburg Area.

What school are you attending?
I am currently attending McDaniel College, where I am majoring in Physics. However, next fall I will be enrolled at Messiah College. At Messiah I will be majoring in either, Business Administration or Mechanical Engineering. There are several reasons that I am transferring but mainly because of financial reasons.
